Fought between 1904-1922. On defense, he was elusive and had very good head movement,
only his footwork could be considered sub par. On offense, Joe used his physical
presence to excel at infighting which was popular during his time. He patterned his
style after Sam Langford, his hero. As great as he was, Joe did not start to box
until he was 25 years old. Within two years of turning pro, Jeannette was already
considered one of the best black heavyweights in the nation and had fought the much
more experienced Jack Johnson seven times. The results were pretty telling, Joe won
one fight, drew one fight, lost one fight and the rest of the bouts with Johnson were
called no decisions. Perhaps this is why Johnson did not fight Jeannette after he won
the heavyweight title, and Jeannette had time to hone his skills. Joe stated "Jack
forgot about his old friends after he became champion and drew the color line against
his own people." Harsh words, but his record shows Jeannette was right. Source: NJBHOF
